Every year, I make a list of the year’s top movies, but I’ve never made a list of the films I’m looking forward to before. 2020 looks like a year filled with many exciting films that I hope to see.
Here they are in release order:
A Quiet Place: Part II
March 20th
I didn’t know what to expect from A Quiet Place (2018), beyond something to pass the time on a long flight. The film amazed me, and exceeded all my expectations – it even made my list of the best films of 2018. After watching the trailer, now I can’t wait for the sequel! The film looks like it will partially be a prequel showing the arrival of the creatures that devastated mankind. I’m looking forward to this film explaining that part of the story.
No Time to Die
April 10th
I am always ready for a new James Bond film, and the latest installment looks very exciting! Rami Malek, coming off his Oscar-winning role in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), looks as if he will play a decent villain. This will also be Daniel Craig’s last time portraying our favorite spy. It will be sad to see him go, but if anyone knows when it’s time to hang up the tuxedo, it’s Daniel Craig.
Black Widow
May 1st
Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) has always intrigued me. Where did she come from? How did she become a part of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Based on the previews, I assume that this film is set between Avengers films – probably between Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Black Widow promises several exciting action sequences and a hilarious performance from David Harbour.
Fast and Furious 9
May 22nd
I originally thought the producers of the Fast & Furious franchise should have stopped with Furious 7 (2015) out of respect for Paul Walker. It didn’t seem right to continue without him. However, both The Fate of the Furious (2017) and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) won me over. I’m not familiar with the plot just yet, but I know Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez will put on a good show.
Wonder Woman 1984
June 5th
Wonder Woman (2017) was a pleasant surprise – it turned out better than I expected. I wanted more out of the character after her introduction in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and the 2017 installment didn’t disappoint. The fact that this second chapter takes place the year I was born certainly helps pique my interest. I loved what I found in the trailer – the pop culture references, the music, the effects – it’s going to be a fun film.
Top Gun: Maverick
June 26th
Admittedly, I wasn’t excited for this film at first. Over thirty years after the original, I thought Tom Cruise should forget about reprising his role as Maverick. As much as I love his movies, Top Gun (1986) isn’t one of my favorites (I’m sure I just heard my wife gasp). However, the trailers did an excellent job building my excitement. The flying sequences look very realistic and I think seeing this in theaters will be worth it.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
July 10th
I’m thrilled that Jason Reitman is taking the reins for the next installment in the Ghostbusters franchise. His father Ivan directed two great films that have resonated with me since childhood. Even though I enjoyed Ghostbusters (2016), I was disappointed that it didn’t occupy the same universe as the originals. I think this film will make up for it, especially knowing that it will feature the surviving members of the original cast.
Tenet
July 17th
Of all the films on this list, I’m most excited about Tenet. Director Christopher Nolan also made Inception (2010), which is one of my all-time favorites. Tenet looks like it is made the same way, including many of the same filmmaking techniques as far as stunts and cinematography. The preview didn’t show much, but what I got out of it is that it’s a time-bending heist film. Just typing this paragraph made me that much more excited!
Jungle Cruise
July 24th
Dwayne Johnson is on a hot streak. He is constantly making films that don’t disappoint. Almost every time I’m on the Jungle Cruise ride at Disneyland, I wonder why Disney hasn’t made a film about it yet. It took them too long to start the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but look at how well that did for them. With Johnson and Emily Blunt at the lead, how can they fail? The pair’s joint D23 appearance certainly promised fun and entertainment!
Coming 2 America
Expected December 18th
Coming to America (1988) is the funniest Eddie Murphy film of all time. This sequel seems long overdue and almost unnecessary, but I know Murphy still has great things in store. His recent stint hosting Saturday Night Live had me in stitches – he’s still hilarious. The plot is still largely unknown, but the combination of Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, and James Earl Jones is enough for me to know it will be great.
Happy watching!
